Sneak Preview of my Preschooler!

I debated whether or not to share these sneak previews, to keep that official first day of school sacred. But I have the cutest story to share, so it turns out you'll get the preview!

A couple weekends ago, I went shopping with my mom and my 2 main goals for the day were:

1- fall clothes- failed goal- too early, but of course since I don't shop that often anymore, I had to at least try (this happened to me in the spring, too; I distinctly remember being too early then for summer clothes, too!!)...I guess I'll have to go shopping again...luckily you won't have to twist my arm to do that!

2-a backpack for Daniel- SCORE!!! I was beyond excited to find the perfect backpack for my son, my little preschooler, that day! I had done a little research online, measured Daniel's back, brought one his bigger shirts to compare backpacks to, brought my measuring tape, and so on- yes I put that much effort into this whole thing! I was concerned about the size of backpacks since he is so petite, but he also needs room to put stuff. This backpack is perfect!!! Found it at the second store we looked in, too. Nice and easy! It's blue and has robots all over it which is perfect for Daniel since he loves robots! It's easy to zip, has a few other pockets, of course all adjustable, and even has a buckle to keep the straps together across the chest, and it's really good quality. I love it. So, I'm done with that part of the getting ready for school mission.

And now, here's the sweet story...the reason you get to see these pictures...
When I came home, Daniel right away said, what did you buy? I told him I bought him a backpack and asked if he would like to see it. He said he did. He sat down on the bottom step in our front hallway and closed his eyes, "so it would be a surprise" he said, while I got the bag out. Then I set the bag down in front of him, he opened his eyes as I pulled the backpack out of the bag, and his expression was just the sweetest ever: a smile slowly and sweetly spread across his face and his eyes grew bigger and were filled with awe and he simply, quietly said "woow!" He was impressed. He was quietly excited. It was so sweet. I loved that moment and his expression. I'll never forget it. It was just the best ever backpack reveal!

Daniel is getting more and more excited about preschool these days. Anytime he hears "September" he immediately chimes in "that's when I go to preschool!" He sure knows. I also think I have his first day of school outfit picked out, too. Found that a month or so ago! But I'm with my friend, I think his closet will have to be EMPTY so he has to pick this or that shirt only! Or else, I'll just have to learn to let go, and deal if he really wants to wear something else. Or maybe not, maybe we will just go with the empty closet.

So here's the sneak peak! Of course, Annabel loved the backpack, too, because she loves anything Daniel has...she wore it forever after he tried it on. She didn't want me to put it away (which I did because I want it to be NEW for school, not battered from home play already!), so we got their Elmo backpack out and she wore that forever, too.

Here's an up close picture...check out those cool robots!

Daniel's Popcorn Quest

Last Friday night we headed to a local car show with Grandma Mary Kay and Grandpa Larry. Daniel and Daddy had gone to a car show the previous weekend and Daniel had a lot of fun checking out the engines, so he was very excited to go to this show and see more. Daniel was also very excited to look for some popcorn. For some reason, Daniel got the idea that car shows meant popcorn. He'd looked with Daddy at the other car show and didn't find any. So he was pretty keen to try again to find some popcorn this time. And guess what? He did! He'd seen some people walking around with popcorn at one point and exclaimed "There IS popcorn here! See? They have popcorn!" And of course, to get to our car, we had to walk past the popcorn. He was a happy little boy after that! I will tell you...I can't remember the last time Daniel, or any of us really, had popcorn, so I have no idea where Daniel's craving and idea for popcorn came from. It's pretty funny sometimes...the ideas kids come up with! We got a kick out of Daniel's quest for popcorn!

That Toothy Smile...and a doctor update

I'm going to miss this two-tooth smile! It's just so cute, and SO Annabel! She's a smiley baby and every smile has always oh-so-cutely displayed just those top two teeth... until now. Annabel's next top two teeth are quite visible now... the smile is of course still so adorable, but it's not just the two cute teeth anymore, and for some reason, that has me nostalgic for the wee baby smiles already! Still, Annabel can keep those super cute smiles coming- they just bigger and bigger every day if you can imagine that, because her smiles are already so big! Love 'em all!

In other news, we had Annabel's 15 month well visit early last week, and Daniel had a weight check then, too. Things are looking good and the doctor was pleased with all progress. It appears at long last that Annabel will be following in the steps of her petite brother with her own slow but sure growth- this visit pretty much confirmed that for us (I've kinda been waiting for this "confirmation" to happen). She still weighs 17 lbs 5 oz (no change in that from 12 mos. but nothing to worry about) and she's 29 inches tall. Given Daniel's growth records, and my own growth history (remember when I said Daniel is following my own growth chart exactly), the doctor is not at all worried about Annabel. Runs in the family. Annabel is doing well in all other areas, and she's happy, she is growing, so we'll just watch her like we watch Daniel. I'm no stranger to slow growth as we all know from Daniel, so this time around, I'm a little more relaxed about it. It is what it is. I have peanuts! Adorable peanuts!

Speaking of my peanuts, my other peanut grew a tad bit, too. Daniel is finally 36 inches tall- three whole feet!!! He weighed 25 lbs 4 oz, a slight increase from previous checks. So, again, there's growth. Little by little. And although the kid eats next to nothing most days and I was seriously getting pretty worried, the doctor reassured me that kids this age tend not to eat as much, they don't need as much food, and so on. It's just that with a kid who already barely ate anything, it looks like a lot less anything and more like nothing if that makes sense. I was just glad she was so reassuring and so willing to figure in his age, this stage of life, this as a phase, and help me not worry. We really have a fantastic doctor!

Sports Camp

Daniel is participating in a Sports Camp for a few weeks now and loving it! I had been looking into some more activities for him to do since it's been so hot out and I thought doing something fun and different indoors would be nice. At first, I couldn't find anything that fit our schedule and I was so bummed, but then nature class got cancelled (much to our chagrin- we miss it! although with this heat...maybe we're glad?) and that opened the door for a few options- Daniel chose Sports Camp. He goes twice a week for 4 weeks, 45 minutes each time- so just a little snippet of time, but they try out different sports and learn to work together and all that jazz- it's a good camp and the perfect way to try some different things out and get some of that energy out, too. He's gone three times already and just loves it. On the days he doesn't go, he asks when he gets to go again- last Friday it was 4 days until he would go again and he said "that's a looong time!" Miss Erin, the teacher from Daniel's Puddle Jumpers class (aka- big boy class), is the coach for this camp and I was so glad to see that he would have someone familiar there, and for me, someone who I know is just excellent with the kids. They all seem to have a lot of fun from what Erin comes out and tells us at the end of class.

Here's Daniel all ready for his 1st day at camp!

They were even given camp shirts to wear. Of course, it's huuuuge on Daniel, but he does have fun wearing it!

Splash Park Fun

We headed to a local splash park a couple weeks ago, on a day when it wasn't so so hot. The kids had a lot of fun. Neither of them really wanted to go in the water sprays, but they'd go up to them, get a little wet, try to collect a little water in their cups, and then quickly run away. They had more fun dumping water I'd collected (at their requests), than actually playing in the sprays. But that's okay, we did have a great time. Annabel got into the water a little more than Daniel- she was soaked by the end of our visit! And she was so cute about it, too- she'd get wet, run back to our stroller where I had the towel hanging, dry off her face, and off she'd go again only to repeat this same procedure ten seconds later! She had a lot of fun just running back and forth!

I have a few more splash parks I'd like to try that supposedly have a little more to them...hopefully the weather won't be so so hot and we can get outside a little more again and try some more splash parks! Enjoy our pics from this visit to the splash park!

Here's a video of Annabel playing with the water sprays. And yes, that would be Daniel about to take away Annabel's toys...we're working on that with him. It seems that the brother/sister tug-of-war over toys has begun in this house...'twas bound to happen sooner or later. Enjoy Little Miss Cutie Pie's video!

Annabel is 15 Months Old!

Happy 15 Months, Annabel!!
Here's my beautiful, sweet Annabel with that adorable smile!

Aaaand she's done...This is one ticked off baby girl now!!

Happier, kinda, with Daniel nearby!

Daniel was more than happy to pose with Minnie...his idea actually!

So so so many updates for our little 15 month old baby girl! Annabel is one busy girl these days! And growing up fast!

Annabel does not like being sat down with Minnie...not one bit. That top picture was the best I got. I also got a lot of crying pictures, too! And then some sweet ones with Daniel.

Anyway...where do I start???!

I'll start with a few new words. Annabel now says "dat" to indicate things she wants. It's very clear- "dat" with a point of her finger, you just have to guess what "dat" is sometimes. Annabel also says "na" for no and she says it a lot, of course, we just knew she would. I remember that Daniel didn't learn the word "no" or shake his head much for the loooongest time- I had friends who were jealous of this. No such luck this time. But it's not really that bad yet, it's still kind of cute to hear the "na" complete with a shake of her head. I also think she's close to saying down and even Daniel, because she's got the "n" on the end with a "d" beginning; it comes out kind of like "dahn" and seems appropriate to whatever is going on. Annabel has also picked up a few other letter sounds, like her l's and can even do sounds effects like "vvvvv" for flying and driving. It's cute to listen to her talk. I love it.

Annabel does a lot more pretending and playing now, too. She hides toys behind her back with one hand and will hold out the other hand in a "where?" gesture and then when you wonder where it is, too, she will hold it out for you with a big grin on her face. So cute! Love this game!

Annabel also flies toy planes around, complete with a "vvvv" for sound effects. I love how quickly she picked up the pretend flying with the toys. It's cute to watch her.

The other pretending she does is feeding us. She LOVES to pretend to feed us. Annabel will get a bowl or cup and fork or spoon, stir it up, and then walk up to us with spoon extended out for us to eat. She thinks this is too funny!

Annabel's collecting interests have expanded. She's always loved collecting things into her hands, but now she's getting to the point where she can do it one-handed, not necessarily needing the second hand to put things into the first, if this makes sense. So she can essentially collect with both hands now, not just one. This, to her, is pretty exciting. She's also learned she can scoop things up to clean up faster. I remember noticing this with Daniel for the first time when he was little and now I've noticed it with Annabel, too...it's the little things for me...love it.

Another of Annabel's pastimes is opening drawers. She LOVES to open drawers and take things out all the time now. When we play upstairs, you can count on Annabel to have taken half her clothes out of her dresser in a matter of minutes. I never went through this with Daniel...he was never that interested in opening drawers and we certainly didn't play upstairs nearly as much with him as we do with Annabel. So she has lots of practice. She's good about cleaning up for the most part and will usually close the drawers when asked to do so, too.

Annabel is also really into reading books these days, too. It's so cute to watch her read. She will just sit herself down with a book anywhere and turn the pages back and forth and look intently at the pictures. If it's a book where we're looking for something (like Where's Spot? or Where's Baby's Beach Ball?), she will open the flaps, shake her head and say "na" for no. It's so cute to see her practically really reading books this way, she remembers that we're looking for something in the book- I love it.

We're also having a lot of fun with Ring-around-the-rosie with Annabel and Daniel. And once you get her started, she won't let you stop. She just loves to hold Daniel's hand especially, and she loves the part where we all fall down. She thinks this is so funny! Annabel will literally follow Daniel around with her arms extended because she wants to hold his hand or play this game.

One super cute thing Annabel has learned is where her belly is. She will show off her belly quite proudly, all you have to do is ask her where her belly is!! She also knows where shoes go and tries to put them on, same with shirts and pants although these go on her head mostly! Annabel loves to comb her hair. She loves to play dress up. She knows that when it's time to change into clothes or pajamas in the morning or at night, that we have to take her clothes off so she will sit down and tug at whatever she is wearing to get them off. She will do this as soon as we say the word change clothes or as soon as she sees that Daniel is changing.

Annabel wants to do everything that her brother is doing these days! Painting, playing, changing clothes, eating, everything... We're trying to help Daniel figure this out, because of this means Annabel tries to take his toys away. Of course Daniel tends to take her things just as much... And so the sibling struggles begin!

Annabel indicates things she wants with that hand motion she does, like you'd do for give me. She does this especially if something is out of reach that she can see. It's still pretty cute.

I like that not much goes in Annabel's mouth these days, unless it's food. We're finally starting to see a decline in toys going in her mouth. It still happens occasionally, but not nearly as much as before. Thank goodness. Although it is just a sign that my baby is growing up!

Speaking of things going in her mouth, Annabel loves to feed herself these days. She loves to try using the fork and sometimes the spoon, although she's less successful with the spoon still and needs more practice. I also love that I can give Annabel a bowl full of food and she won't dump it, at least not right away. I can give her lots of pieces of food on her tray and she will eat them carefully mostly one at a time, rather than all at once or dropping them right off her tray, too. So mealtimes have gotten a little easier, although she's a rather finicky eater, I think mostly because of the distraction of Daniel, who eats about three bites and calls it a meal with a "full belly." What to do with these kids with small appetites?!! Still, Annabel eats pretty well for the most part and will try lots of things, loves to eat off of our plates, and such. You can tell she's proud of herself and all she can do and eat now! She's mostly a neat eater, too, which I like. Although tonight's pizza adventure would make me a liar...she went straight into the bath tonight because that pizza sauce was everywhere!!!

Those two teeth that were just cutting their way through last time are really visible now. I don't believe there are more on the way just yet, but then, she doesn't exactly let me in her mouth to check! I kind of miss her top-two-toothed-smile already. It was so cute the way her two top teeth would match her bottom teeth and show up as this cute little square of whiteness when she smiled. I liked that. More teeth means less baby! When did I say she could grow up?!

And while I'm nostalgic for babyhood, let me tell you now some more news that really has me both sad but SO SO SO proud...Annabel is finally, finally I tell you, sleeping MUCH better!! Ben was right, of course, to enjoy the previous months where we'd hold Annabel to sleep, sometimes all night, sometimes for a little while, snuggle her up in our arms, on our shoulders, cuddle her up, love her up...I did enjoy those moments, most of the time, and I kinda miss it already. I'm already left wondering if I enjoyed it enough though, if Annabel could tell enough how much I loved her, even if I did want her to just sleep sometimes, mommy guilt has kicked in majorly. But, alas, we're here, we're where we wanted to be...eventually, and eventually is now I guess. Annabel had started to indicate when she was ready for naps and bedtimes by finding pink bear, clutching pink bear tightly into her arms and the crook of her neck, grabbing us, and pointing up the stairs, and all the way to her room. She did this a few times and we started to get real excited, because this was huge. She was telling us she was ready for bed. That was a great step for her!

Then, Annabel started sleeping longer chunks, all of a sudden- she started only waking up one or two times a night, instead of every two hours for a grand total of at least 5 night wakings a night. It was one of those things that I held my breath for...is she really doing this? Will this last? Or will she go back to more frequent wakings, having teased us like she's done before? We didn't want to say anything for fear of jinxing it! But, it seems our baby girl is figuring this out, growing up...and so we've moved into just couple night wakings, when I will nurse her as always. She is still nursing like a champ and indicates when she wants to be nursed by saying "dat" and pointing- she's very clear about this! And then...this week...another milestone...

Annabel is finally starting to fall asleep on her own!! Three times now...she will nurse for a while, get all her cuddles and love, and then she will point to her bed, I'll put her down in it and say good night I love you sweet dreams my baby girl, sometimes with tear in my eye, disbelief hidden somewhere in me, and then we don't hear a peep out of her. Really. She falls asleep, on her own, in bed...not sweetly curled up in my arms. Do you feel my sadness? Do you feel my joy, too, though? My pride? Because I really am SO proud of my baby girl! But I'm also really not sure which one to feel right now, I'm in this huge tug-of-war. And since this is still so so new, I'm still in a real state of disbelief, shock even...that we're finally here. And of course I miss my baby. So, in this state of disbelief, I'm actually still sort of very excited when she wakes up at 2 AM, because I get to see the baby I've missed seeing for the last 6 or so hours, I get to nurse her some more, she falls asleep in my arms then, and I hold her for a just a bit longer, or maybe it's just a bit tighter, and I put her back in bed, with her sweet sleeping face still there when I close my eyes. And so that's our biggest news, our biggest development...our biggest oh my gosh YAY. Because I am excited for this new stage in Annabel's development. It just means she growing up so fast...I miss babyhood already.

Happy 15 Months, Annabel! We're so proud of all the growing up you're doing!

My Little Artists

Back when it was still 100 degrees outside, we spent a morning painting in the basement! Daniel painted a small cardboard box he found the previous day, which is what gave him the idea to paint. And even Annabel got to join the fun. She absolutely loved painting! She painted a lot longer than Daniel did. I put her in a large shirt which covered her entire body and let her have at it with a plate with two dollops of paint, a paper to paint on, and a paintbrush of her very own. She had a ball! And she had paint all over her arms, and even in her hair (which she must have done in the two split seconds when I refilled Daniel's paint...grrr!)...but of course she didn't mind one bit. I didn't either, mostly. It was fun to watch Annabel experiment with the paint, the brush smooshing the paint around, mixing the colors, making marks on the paper, going back for more paint, and so on. And when she discovered that she could ask for more paint and other colors (like Daniel did), well, she just kept wanting more and more and she kept painting and painting. I loved the whole process with her! Such cute pictures of my artists below!

Daniel still has his "thinking hand"...

I think this one is my favorite...I love Annabel's serious expression here and the blur of her hand in motion...

See?...GIANT shirt...just her toes poke out! Love it!

"Project Store" Fun

One of our fun discoveries this summer has been what Daniel calls the "project store". There's a local toy store that's hosting a different free craft every week during the summer and we've been enjoying that a lot! Our first project was a treasure chest, which Daniel had the most fun decorating and then playing with back at home. The next week it was a beach ball, which they ran out of minutes after we made ours; thankfully we got there in time! The beach ball was decorated with markers and we've had fun with that around the house, too. This week the craft supplies ran out (again), but we had enough fun just decorating cardboard cutouts of a car (Daniel) and a flower (Annabel- yes, she participated this week and LOVED it- she did NOT want to stop! She's definitely my strong willed child). And of course the kids love that it's in a TOY store, so we have fun looking around, too. Daniel is drawn to the super nice big huge trucks that they have...these are on his birthday list now. He's so good about shopping- I'll just put this on my birthday list, he always says. Love it! They have a train running around above our heads by the ceiling, which Annabel loves. They have a Chuggington (TV train show) train table for the kids to play with, which is always a hit. They usually have a few other demo toys, too. It's a super fun store! And when it was 100 degrees outside for those couple weeks, this was a nice cool activity for us to come to! We're planning to keep going each week...Daniel looks forward to it and always asks to go to the project store now!

And near that store, there's a "train restaurant" that we've gone to twice now, too. It all works out wonderfully- do the project and then go out to eat, or vice versa. Annabel LOVED the train restaurant. She was delighted with the trains, the ones overhead and the ones that serve our food. She had the most fun! It was the first time she'd been really been to a restaurant like this, so it was fun to see her delighted reaction.

Thanks to Grandma Cheryl for joining us on one of these excursions! And this week, we took Delilah and Asher with us, which was lots of fun, too! Enjoy our project store and train restaurant pictures!

Treasure chest decorating...

Beach ball decorating...

Checking out toys...

First time at the train restaurant...

Second time at the train restaurant...still just as delighted!

Daniel was being a one-eyed pirate I think...

Sand-art on cardboard cutouts...scooping colored sand out of jars was tons of fun!
Annabel LOVED doing the project, too!
